Android 4.2: A new flavor of Jelly Bean.

Android 4.2: A new flavor of Jelly Bean.

Android 4.2 takes the speed and simplicity of Jelly Bean to a different level – a completely new camera experience that’s beyond smart, a new form of typing that helps you power through your messages, and much more.

Simple, Beautiful and Beyond Smart

Amazing Photo Sphere camera

Up, down and all around you, it’s like no camera you’ve ever seen. With Android 4.2, snap pictures in every direction that come together into incredible, immersive photo spheres that put you right inside the scene. View your photo spheres right on your phone, share them on Google+ with your friends and family, or even add them to Google Maps for the world to see.

Explore incredible photo spheres from photographers around the world.

A smarter keyboard, now with Gesture Typing

Writing messages on the go is easier than ever with Gesture Typing – just glide your finger over the letters you want to type, and lift after each word. You don’t have to worry about spaces because they’re added automatically for you.

The keyboard can anticipate and predict the next word, so you can finish entire sentences just by selecting suggested words. Power through your messages like never before.

Android's dictionaries are now more accurate and relevant. With improved text-to-speech capabilities, voice typing on Android is even better. It works even when you don't have a data connection, so you can type with your voice everywhere you go.

One tablet, many users.

It’s your fully customized tablet. And theirs, too. With support for multiple users, you can give each person their own space. Everyone can have their own homescreen, background, widgets, apps and games – even individual high scores and levels! And since Android is built with multitasking at its core, it’s a snap to switch between users – no need to log in and out. Available only on tablets.

Share what’s on your phone on the big screen.

Android 4.2 allows devices to enable wireless display. You can share movies, YouTube videos, and anything that’s on your screen on an HDTV. Just connect a wireless display adapter to any HDMI-enabled TV to mirror what’s on your screen quickly and easily.

Daydream.

Daydream lets your Android device display useful and delightful information when idle or docked. Show off your photo albums, get the latest news from Google Currents, and more.

Expandable, actionable notifications.

Android has always put you in control when it comes to staying notified and connected. Just swipe down from the top of the screen to see all your notifications in one place. Late for a meeting or missed a call? Take action in an instant directly from the notifications shade.

Live in the Now.

Google Now brings you the information you need, when and where you need it, before you even ask. Google Now tells you today's weather before you start your day, or when the next train will arrive as you’re standing on the platform. With the latest version, you can see popular photo spots nearby, track packages easily, get information about upcoming movies, and much more.

See what’s new in Google Now.

A new look for Google Search.

It's easier than ever to quickly get answers, explore, and browse search results. Android also lets you search the web with your voice, and it's convenient for getting quick answers on the fly. It speaks back to you and is powered by the Knowledge Graph, bringing you a precise answer if it knows it, and precisely ranked search results, so you can always find out more.

Fast and smooth.

We put Android under a microscope, making everything feel fast, fluid, and smooth. With buttery graphics and silky transitions, moving between home screens and switching between apps is effortless, like turning pages in a book.

More reactive and uniform touch responses mean you can almost feel the pixels beneath as your finger moves across the screen. Jelly Bean makes your Android device even more responsive by boosting your device's CPU instantly when you touch the screen, and turns it down when you don't need it to improve battery life.

Beam photos and videos.

With Android Beam on Jelly Bean you can now easily share your photos and videos with just a simple tap, in addition to sharing contacts, web pages, YouTube videos, directions, and apps. Just touch two NFC-enabled Android devices back-to-back, then tap to beam whatever's on the screen to your friend.

Widgets work like magic.

With Jelly Bean it's now even easier to personalize your home screen. As you place widgets on the screen, everything else automatically moves to make room. When they're too big, widgets resize on their own. Interacting with your favorite apps and customizing your home screen has never been easier.

Accessibility.

Enable screen magnification to easily zoom or pan the entire screen to get a closer look. Visually impaired users can now enter full-screen magnification with a triple-tap on the screen, and even type and interact with the device while zoomed in. Blind users can use Gesture Mode to reliably navigate the UI using touch and swipe gestures in combination with speech output.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for 2012 Xperia devices rolling out from mid Q1 2013

by XB on 19/10/2012

Sony Mobile has this morning confirmed that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its new Xperia devices (Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V) will start to receive the update from the middle of Q1 2013. Sony Xperia devices that launched earlier this year including the Xperia S, Xperia acro S, Xperia ion, Xperia P, Xperia go and Xperia J will be upgraded to Android 4.1 in “due course”. Looks like Xperia miro, Xperia tipo, Xperia tipo dual, Xperia sola and Xperia U users are excluded.

The release date for Jelly Bean is later than we expected, we had always assumed it would launch later this year. Recent owners of the Sony Xperia T/TX may feel the most annoyed especially since Sony said that the handsets will be “upgraded to Android version 4.1 (Jelly Bean) following launch“. We interpret ‘following launch’ as near enough immediately after release – certainly not four months later.

We suspect that the JB launch for the other 2012 Xperia models could take as long as early Q2 2013, given that no concrete information has been given. It’s hard not to commend Sony Mobile for updating many of its mid-range handsets along with their higher-end models. However, Xperia sola and Xperia U owners will rightfully be arguing why they won’t be seeing the update. It’s certainly not a question of hardware specification.

What we do know by now is that Android version upgrades are a slow and painful process for all manufacturers. There’s also every likelihood that Sony Mobile is hindered with the sheer volume of handsets it has released this year and last. Trying to update and certify a new Android version update for all of these handsets must be a logistical nightmare. Let’s hope that as time goes on, Sony gets better at releasing more timely updates.

Thanks Stojan!

Could some Xperia Jelly Bean updates arrive before the end of the year?

by XB on 22/10/2012

Last week Sony Mobile confirmed that the new Xperia T/TX/V handsets would get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by mid Q1 2013. Sony made no mention on when the rest of the 2012 Xperia line-up would see the updates, apart from confirming that most of the range would see the update at some point. Now take the following with a massive pinch of salt, but techenclave is reporting that a number of 2012 Sony Xperia handsets will see Android 4.1 Jelly Bean launch this year.

techenclave says that the “information comes from our sources within Sony Mobile Communications (and a 3rd party in between, trusted source),” we’re not entirely sure what the bracketed part means? Anyway, the site claims that the Xperia S, Xperia ion and Xperia acro S will receive the update by the end of October/early November.

They go on to say that the Xperia U and Xperia sola will also receive the JB update, this is despite the phones not being included in the initial Sony Mobile post. However, Sony did confirm in the comments section that it was “still evaluating potential upgrades for Xperia sola/Xperia U smartphones and will be back with more information shortly.” So if you own either phone we wouldn’t give up hope yet. techenclave says that the Xperia P, Xperia U, Xperia go and Xperia sola will receive the JB update by early December.

Whilst the site claims to have some inside track on the Android Xperia launch schedule, we find it hard to believe. For example, if the news is true, why would Sony Mobile reveal the JB timeline for the Xperia T/TX/V (February 2013), but leave out the others which are meant to launch earlier? If the JB launch for these phones is imminent, then surely Sony would have greater clarity on timing?

Plus, there is every possibility that new firmware would have popped up on the PTCRB website if an update was to release in the next fortnight for the Xperia S, Xperia ion and Xperia acro S . Now we know, the PTCRB isn’t bullet-proof and that sometimes firmware doesn’t appear on the site until much later, but it does have a pretty good track record for most updates.

Whilst we’d love to believe that this report is true, we don’t see it personally. We have covered the Sony Xperia Android programme since day one and Sony has never announced a later date for some phones and pleasantly surprised with an earlier date for other phones down the line. We’d love to be proved wrong, but if the JB launch date really was imminent, Sony would shout it from the rooftops, rather than get the bad PR they did. Sony has kept quiet on timing for the Xperia S and other phones so don’t hold your breath if you’re expecting to see it this year.

Sony Mobile trademarks “MyXperia”

by XB on 22/10/2012

Sony Mobile has trademarked the term “MyXperia” in Europe through the OHIM (Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market). Looking at the trademark listing, MyXperia relates to a mobile app for “upload, storage, retrieval, download, transmission and delivery of digital content and media“. Could Sony Mobile be preparing to launch its own cloud storage service? We’ll bring you more as we have it.

Xperia J will get ‘SMS counter’ function

by XB on 23/10/2012

It looks like the Sony Xperia J will get a new feature we haven’t seen before called SMS counter. The screenshot below was sent to us by one of our readers which shows the SMS counter in the menu settings. SMS counter will allow you to set a limit on how many SMS messages can be sent per month – good for those on restrictive mobile contracts. We’re not sure if this feature will slowly hit all Sony Xperia handsets, see a larger screenshot below.

How many Sony products can you spot in this Skyfall promo TV ad?

by XB on 23/10/2012
in Videos

The new James Bond film Skyfall has its Royal World Premiere in London later this evening, so we thought it would be an apt time to show you this new TV ad. The “Sony Skyfall Intelligence Gathered” commercial is product placement galore, with Sony leveraging its position to showcase its latest brands.

Sony is trying to get the message of how its products interact and this comes across well in the strapline: “Even a man known for working alone needs technology that works together.” Check out the video below and see how many Sony products you can spot, it’s not hard as the product placement isn’t subtle.

Xperia T Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean firmware (9.1.A.0.187) spotted in benchmark

by XB on 22/10/2012

Sony Mobile expects to launch the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean firmware update for the Xperia T (LT30p, LT30at) during the middle of Q1 2013. However, prior to this, Sony will be putting the firmware through plenty of test time. It looks like one branch of this firmware has already been discovered on GLBenchmark.

The benchmark listing clearly shows that firmware version 9.1.A.0.187 for the LT30p relates to Android 4.1.1. This means that we are likely to see a jump up from the current Xperia T ICS firmware (7.0.A.1.303) to eDream 9 which will bring Jelly Bean.

This is not the first time we’ve come across eDream 9, we also saw it pop up on the Xperia V (9.0.D.0.175). However, judging by the GLBenchmark listing for the Xperia V, it seems that the 9.0.D.0.XXX firmware is still Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. So we need to keep an eye out for 9.1.A.0.XXX firmware when looking for the Jelly Bean versions.
Interestingly, the recent Sony Odin leaks pointed to eDream 10 firmware (10.1.A.0.XXX) that was also Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. We imagine, unsurprisingly, that Sony is planning a number of software enhancements for its 2013 flagships that will not be in the JB update for the 2012 models.

First Sony C660X ‘Yuga’ sample picture appears

The first sample picture from the Sony C660X, codenamed Yuga, has appeared on Picasa. The picture itself isn’t revealing as it appears to be of a Chinese poster. The EXIF information doesn’t reveal anything we don’t know either – the compressed image hides what sensor this phone will have.

However, we understand it will be running a 13MP Exmor RS CMOS sensor. This particular model is running 10.1.A.0.270 firmware (Android 4.1.1). Both Yuga (C660X) and Odin (C650X) are expected to be the Sony Mobile 2013 flagship models. We’ll bring you more information as we have it.

The Sony Yuga had its display and quad-core Krait internals leaked in the not so distant past, and now its camera draws our attention. Other than that, the photo doesn't tell us much about Sony's future flagship Android device. The Yuga and Odin are expected to be Sony's flagship models for 2013 and might be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of February 2013.

Sony C650X 'Odin' spotted on candid camera?

We did talk about the Sony C650X Odin’s alleged specifications more than a week ago, but had absolutely no inkling of an idea as to just how the smartphone would look like. Well, it does seem as though additional light has been shed into the darkness of rumors, and here we are with what could very well be the first leaked image of the Sony C650X Odin in the flesh. The Sony C650X Odin is touted to be Sony Mobile’s upcoming flagship device, where it will be positioned to fight for the Android-powered phablet market share among other rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, LG Intuition and HTC DLX.

It seems that Sony has translated their TV design over to the C650X Odin, where there is hardly a bezel for your eyes to grab a hold of, as it does look as though the screen itself offers edge-to-edge functionality. Of course, this could be due to the fact that the device itself has been turned off, so one cannot really make a conclusion as to whether this is legit or not. Rumored specifications include a 5” display at 1080 x 1920 resolution, a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB RAM. Perhaps more will be revealed at the CES showfloor next year – or will we see an official announcement at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona after?

Alleged Sony “Odin” specs spotted in forums, suggests 5″ 1080p display

A few days ago we reported that a certain Sony device with the codename “Odin” hinted at the possibility that this could be Sony’s flagship phone in 2013. However until today, only the name was known but thanks to the folks at Phone Arena, they have managed to stumble across a forum thread which was dedicated to Xperia rumors. While the post itself is a bit dated, what makes it somewhat credible is the fact that the poster referenced “Odin” a good few months before the tech publications (like ourselves) came across it.

Since these specs cannot be confirmed, they should be taken with a grain of salt but for the sake of discussion and entertaining possibilities, here’s what “Odin” could feature. For starters it seems that Sony will be taking their cue from Samsung and LG with a 5” display which sounds like a “phablet” to us. However Sony might be one-upping the competition with a 1080p Full HD display. It will pack 2GB of RAM and will be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the same one powering the LG Optimus G. Apart from that, not much else was revealed.

However given that the thread is kind of old, there is a chance that some of these specs/features could be changed, especially since we’re not quite in 2013. It is not entirely impossible as Sony did state earlier this year at MWC 2012 that they will not be releasing quad-core phones until 2013, but what do you guys make of this? Do you think Sony is jumping aboard the “phablet” bandwagon, and would you get your hands on it if such a device did exist?

MALACCA (MELAKA) YOU MUST VISIT THESE PLACES TO RELIVE THE HISTORY

YOU MUST VISIT THESE PLACES TO RELIVE THE HISTORY

A BRIEF HISTORY

Malacca was founded by a fleeing prince from Sumatra in 14th century, it developed into a major trading port for ships from India and China. As the Melaka Sultanate flourished, the Portuguese conquered Malacca in 1511. Later the Dutch took over in 1641 until much later the British empire ruled Malacca. The state finally obtained independence with the then "Malaya states" in 1957. Today, one will find many remnants of the glorious past dated back more than 500 years ago.

HISTORICAL PLACES
A replica of the Melaka Sultanate palace was reconstructed at the foot of St. Paul's Hill. The design is based on the description of the palace from the sixteenth-century 'Malay Annals,' or 'Sejarah Melayu.' It is the only building of its kind in Malaysia, and it provides a rare glimpse of the ancient Malay kingdom that once flourished here. The palace houses the Malacca Cultural Museum, which includes many artifacts of that kingdom.

On top of St. Paul's Hill is the St. Paul's Church, once the prayer house of the Portuguese Catholics, then turned into burial ground for their noble dead by the Dutch. The tombstones have Latin and Portuguese inscriptions on them. St. Francis Xavier was buried here in 1553 before his body was moved to Goa in India.

After the Portuguese captured Melaka, they built a fortress to defend themselves. The fortress, called A'Famosa suffered severe destruction during the Dutch invasion. What's left today is just the entrance walls, still well preserved till today

The Stadthuys (1650) was the official residence of the Dutch Governor. It now houses the Historic Museum and Ethnography Museum which has many traditional bridal costumes and relics on display. Nearby, one will also find the Christ Church built in 1753, another fine example of the Dutch architecture.

During the peak of the Malacca Sultanate, the Sultan was gifted the Princess Hang Li Poh by the China Emperor. Her entourage settled in Bukit China (Chinese Hill). Today, Bukit China is believed to be the largest Chinese cemetery outside China, with many tombs dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Hang Li Poh's followers built a well in 1459 that is said to have never dried up. Today, the well is turned into a wishing well and many believe those who toss coins into the well will return again to Malacca.

The Kampung Keling Mosque is one of the oldest in the country (17th century). It's a blend of Sumatran and Western architecture with a 3 tier pyramid roof, a touch of Hindu influence perhaps. The carved wooden ceiling is supported by elegant Corinthian-styled columns.

Another well preserved building, the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple was constructed in 1645 and is believed to be the oldest Chinese temple in the country. The eaves of the temple are decorated with Mythological figures and animation made from broken glass and porcelain. Besides the figures, the wood carvings and lacquer work are almost breath-taking.

There are many other places of historical value well worth a visit. What is mentioned above are just some of the "Not to be miss" sites. If you have more than a day's stay in Malacca, these places are worth visiting too.

OTHER HISTORICAL AND INTERESTING SITES

Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum. 'Straits Chinese' or the Baba and Nyonya , are Chinese of noble descendants that have adopted much of the Malay culture into theirs. The public can now review the heirloom unique to this heritage at private museum run by the Babas and Nyonyas of Malacca. Floral and pictorial motifs grace parts of the front of the house whilst the interior is adorned with intricately carved fittings finished in gold leaf.

Hang Jebat and Hang Kasturi's mausoleum. Two of the Malacca Sultanate's well-known warriors and champion of justice. Hang Jebat was unceremoniously killed by Hang Tuah in a duel of honour that lasted 3 days and 3 nights. He was killed in the name of justice to avenge the sultan's hasty punishment against Hang Tuah for a crime he didn't commit.

Hang Tuah's well is located in Kampung Duyong where Hang Tuah was born and spent his childhood among four of his good friends who would later become the famous warriors of Malacca Sultanate. The well is said to be the abode of his soul which takes the apparition of a white crocodile. For a commoner to catch the glimpse of Hang Tuah is hardly likely. It is said that the holy among us can ever hope to see the apparition.

Jonker's Street, once the richman's street is now a living proof of Malacca's rich baba-nyonya heritage. The buildings are immaculately constructed with elaborate carvings on its pillars and walls. The street is also famous for its antique shops.

Maritime Museum is constructed after 'Flora De La Mar', the Portuguese ship that sank off the Coast of Malacca on its way to Portugal. With its hull laden with invaluable treasures seized from Malacca, the ship was doomed from existence had it not for the efforts to Malacca's heritage. At the museum, visitor can get a closer look at Malacca from the famed Malay Sultanate of the 14th century to the Portuguese era, the Dutch era and the British era. There are exhibits of foreign ships that had once called at the port of Malacca during the height of its maritime hegemony.

Memorial hall (1912), the landmark where the nation's first prime minister announce proclamation of independence from the British empire. It has been preserved with archive pictures of the country's struggle to attain independence.

Portuguese Square has a mild affinity to Portugal and known to be 'Mini Lisbon' in Malacca. Located within the Portuguese Settlement, the square is the culmination of Portuguese culture in its full splendour and colours. One will also find authentic Portuguese restaurants at the square.

Sam Po Kong Temple was constructed in dedication to Admiral Cheng Ho. The temple was named after a fish that miraculously saved the admiral's ship from sinking after it had been hit by a storm enroute to Malacca from China. The fish mysteriously placed itself against a damaged hull preventing the ship from taking on water.

Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple is one of the first Hindu temple built in the country at the turn of the century. It was built on the plot given by the Dutch.

St. Francis Xavier's Church was built in 1849 by a frenchman, Reverend Farve. The Gothic towered church is dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, well-remembered for his missionary work spreading Catholicism to South East Asia in the 16th century.

St. John's Fort was rebuilt by the Dutch during the third quarter of the 18 th century, the fort was once a private Portuguese chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The fort has an interesting feature in that its gun embrasures face inland as during that time, attacks on Malacca came mainly from the land instead of from the sea.

St. Peter's Church was built in 1710 by the Portuguese descendants and comprising an architectural mix of the Oriental and Occidental.

Is this the Sony Nexus X?

by XB on 15/10/2012

A couple of pictures have popped up on Picasa supposedly showing a new Nexus smartphone from Sony dubbed the “Sony Nexus X”. It could be real but it also could be an elaborate fake. There is no Xperia branding on this at all.

There have been rumours of multiple Nexus smartphones this year, but we have seen no hard evidence of such a phone up until this post. For that reason, we find it hard to believe that these images are real, but you never know. What do you think – real or fake?

Thanks Jonny!

Benchmark confirms 1080p display for Sony C660X ‘Yuga’

by XB on 14/10/2012

We are slowly piecing together a jigsaw of some awesome hardware for Sony Mobile’s 2013 flagship device(s). What we know so far is that there will be two sibling flagships – the Sony C650X ‘Odin’ (C6502, C6503, C6506) and Sony C660X ‘Yuga’ (C6603). They will be armed with a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset (APQ8064 & Adreno 320 graphics) and MDM9615 baseband chip with LTE support. These phones are currently being tested with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and 10.1.A.0.XXX firmware.

Now we can confirm that the Sony C660X ‘Yuga’ will have a 1080p (1920 x 1080) display following an appearance in the NenaMark2 benchmark. The benchmark actually points to a resolution of 1794 x 1080, but 126 pixels are likely being used for the on-screen buttons introduced in Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The entry has already been removed from the NenaMark website, but still appears in Google Cache results.

Screen size still remains a mystery for now, but we can make some educated guesses. It is very unlikely to be sub 5-inches given the 1080p display resolution. We know that LG and Sharp have announced their own 5-inch 1080p displays. However, the biggest hint comes from a recent announcement from Japan Display Inc (JDI). For those that don’t know, JDI is a new company for small and medium-sized displays formed in April 2012 through the integration of Sony Mobile Display, Toshiba Mobile Display and Hitachi Displays. It recently announced that it has started to mass produce a 5.0-inch TFT-LCD IPS display module with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and 443 PPI.

We do wonder if a smartphone display with pixel density over 400 PPI is a bit overkill though and whether we’d even be able to tell the difference from a 300 PPI device. We’re also not sure what kind of demands this would have on battery life, but it sounds superb nonetheless and all evidence suggests it will come to the next Sony Xperia flagship.

Xperia AX gets vague Nov/Dec launch date; promo videos released

by XB on 11/10/2012

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo announced its winter handset line-up earlier today. It officially confirmed that the Sony Xperia AX (SO-01E) would be headed to the network and announced plans to release the handset between November and December this year. This is a pretty vague launch date. It is already the middle of October, so we thought that by now Sony would be able to refine the release date down to one month rather than two.

However, what it suggests to us is that it will launch towards the end of November or early December, in line with what Swedish retailers are showing for the Sony Xperia V. If Sony Japan was confident of launching the Xperia AX in November it wouldn’t even mention December. Consumers are fickle and don’t like waiting. It appears that Sony will do its darnedest to get the handset out by the end of November, but as the deadline is tight they are using December as a fall-back.

Android 4.2 being tested on the Xperia arc S?

by XB on 11/10/2012

There have been a number of reports over the last few days of an Android 4.2 build being detected in website server logs. Whether this is a completely new build of Android (Key Lime Pie) or a new version of Jelly Bean is an unknown right now. We first saw the report from Android Police, but what piqued our interest is when Android Authority talked about finding reports of a Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S running the software.

AA went on to say that “in our logs it’s the Xperia Arc S that showed up the most. In fact it was more frequent than the Nexus 7 or the Galaxy Nexus.” Engadget this morning has also this morning reported that it has seen several instances of an Xperia arc S running Android 4.2. However, they go on to say that “upon further investigation it seems more likely that this is a beta of Jelly Bean 4.1 currently being tested by Sony”. We’re not really sure why a Android 4.1 Jelly Bean beta would be flagged as Android 4.2, but as this data can be manipulated we need to be careful in assuming any of this as a fact.

If true though it shows there is a very good chance that Sony and Google are working much closer on future Android builds. This doesn’t automatically mean there is an Xperia Nexus in the works, even if it is, we imagine this is a future rather than current project. It hopefully does mean that the 2011 Xperia devices will be updated to Jelly Bean. We still await official word on this regard from Sony Mobile, but hopefully it will confirm one way or the other very soon.

Thanks adsada and Paul!

Xperia V’s new camera filters demoed on video

by XB on 09/10/2012

The Sony Xperia V (LT25i) has been given a thorough hands-on by the Sony Mobile Russian team. They have posted a 16-minute video of the handset, all of it in Russian. We couldn’t catch the gist of most of it due to the language barrier but did spot some new camera UI features towards the end of the video.

It shows a number of camera filters that will now be enabled when taking pictures. There is also some kind of slider on the right which turns the brightness up and down. If there is anyone that speaks Russian and can give more details on this we’d love to hear about it in the comments below.

Sony confirms sensor-on-lens technology for Xperia V

by XB on 11/09/2012

Sony Mobile has confirmed that the 4.3-inch Xperia V will come with sensor-on-lens touch screen technology. Much like in-cell display technology, it removes the sensor layer which is integrated into the lens resulting in a lighter and thinner phone (as there is one less layer of glass) along with better image quality and a ‘direct touch experience’.

Better image quality is achieved through the one less layer of glass and glue in the handset stack, meaning that there is no interference from that component. Sony says that by removing this single layer, it would typically improve the display luminance by around 5%.

Removing a layer also brings the image plane that much closer to the user making you feel as if you are touching the image itself. Another benefit Sony points to is that the image on the display and the point of touch are brought that much closer resulting in less parallax issues.

Overall, it sounds like a great piece of technology and reaffirms our view that the Sony Xperia V is the real new flagship from Sony Mobile. As far as we understand, the Sony Xperia T/TX does not include this technology and we have reached out to the company for a confirmation.

Tablet purchase entitled for LHDN Income Tax relief?

It is tax filling month and most people would like to save as much as possible through tax relief incentives. One of such tax relief is for computer purchases made every 3 years which entitles you a relief up to RM3,000.

In this day and age, tablets such as iPads, Galaxy Tabs, Transformer, Xoom & Playbook have been gaining popularity. So are these new devices entitled for such tax relief?

According to someone who have asked, LHDN has replied:

if the tablet computer only have computer features and is for home and family use only, then it
will be treated as “computer” and is entitled to the personal income tax relief of up to RM3,000,
                  claimable once in 3 years.

So this means, tablets including iPad are included in the tax relief as long as it is for personal and not for business use. However there’s another condition, it must not have any mobile phone features. If the tablet allows normal mobile calls and sends text messages, you’re not allowed entitled for this relief. Sorry Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Note users.

So currently the safest option is if you purchased an iPad, Playbook and WiFi only Android Tablet. To be extra sure, it is best to double check with the folks at LHDN. Who knows they might expand the definition again.

Anyone has experience on tablet tax relief or have additional income tax tips to share? If you need to verify this information, can make a call to LHDN at 1300-88-3010 or email to callcentre@hasil.gov.my

PureView The next innovation & Nokia PureView FAKED

PureView, The next innovation camera with a "Floating Lens" & it gives more stabilization although you're on the move to capture the photos or videos at every moment of yours. Apeture f2.0, can capture your photos even in a Low Light Conditions. What do you think about it?     o.Oy

For more spec details, pls visit: http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia920/specifications/

Nokia's new PureView ad is amazing, too bad it's FAKED! Just saw this news in pass week ago, is this really a fake Technology? I also not sure on it, just wait Nokia launch in your Country & then you can explore your own. But, really hope it is a real Technology was built in it too. Let's watch the Movie below:

In the mean time, Nokia Apologizes for Lumia 920 PureView Fake Commercial advertise. "Nokia Apologizes For Faking Lumia 920 PureView Ad, According to The Verge, the new Nokia ad features a man taking a video with the Lumia 920 while riding his bike. The ad was supposed to demonstrate the camera's great optical image stabilization. And the video in the ad does look great. But if you watch the ad closely you can see the reflection of a camera van riding next to the bikes. So yes, the video shows great video of two people riding their bikes using optical image stabilization. But no, the video doesn't actually show the capabilities of the PureView Lumia 920. Nokia issued an apology on its website, writing: "In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (which eliminates blurry images and improves pictures shot in low light conditions), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS.... We should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920... We apologize for the confusion we created."

So, Judge your own..... o.Oy

Fresh from #IFA2012 – introducing new Xperia™ smartphone series, and first Xperia™ tablet from Sony

Phones together

Hey guys,

Just finishing up our press conference at the Sony IFA 2012 booth today, and we’re excited to announce new additions to the Xperia family: Xperia T, Xperia V, Xperia J and Xperia Tablet S – all packed with Sony’s best HD experiences to deliver the next step in connected entertainment.

First up, Xperia T is a new flagship Android smartphone boasting a huge 4.6″ signature Sony HD screen, 13MP camera and effortless “One-touch” NFC functionality. We’re also excited to give you a heads-up that James Bond will be sporting one on his latest outing, Skyfall… I’ll fully de-brief you on that later tonight!

Xperia V shares many of the same great features as Xperia T, but it’s also LTE enabled for lightning network performance and comes with the highest level of smartphone water resistance; up to 1m for 30 minutes!

Xperia J has eye-catching design with a large 4″ screen and comes complete with social media update illumination, for those looking for style and affordability.

Xperia T, Xperia V and Xperia J are built on the same design language first introduced by our award winning Xperia arc and Xperia arc S – combining a slim hand fitting form, with a focus on high quality displays for crystal-clear viewing.

Xperia Tablet S brings the world of Xperia to a tablet for the first time. It’s a place for your imagination to play, boasting a quad-core processor, slim aluminium body and splash-proof design, built-in universal remote capability and a wide-range of accessories including covers, docks and stands.

I’ve listed a full rundown of these products’ key specs and shipping details at the foot of this post, so check ‘em out!

These Xperia smartphones also come locked and loaded with Sony’s media applications: “WALKMAN®”, Album, Movie and Music Unlimited – these combine the best of Sony’s hallmark technologies and content to connect you a host of awesome entertainment experiences across Xperia smartphones, tablets and VAIO PCs.

We’ll take a closer look at these apps over the next few days, but word-on-the-booth is that Xperia smartphones shipping from September (until the end of the year) will come with a free 60-day Music Unlimited trial, Sony Entertainment Network’s (SEM) music cloud-streaming service that puts millions and millions of tracks at your fingertips.

What would be the point of all this great content, if you couldn’t easily share it with your nearest and dearest? Well, we’re also putting NFC technology at the heart of our content sharing proposition through “One-touch” functionality.

You can enjoy sharing music and photos instantly through an array of NFC enabled Sony devices, by simply touching one to another to establish a connection, no fumbling around required! For example, Xperia T and Xperia V users can stream music wirelessly with “One-touch” to the new Sony SRS-BTV5 NFC enabled speaker, also announced today.

For all the official information, check out our pressroom.

We’ll be getting up-close-and-personal with all of our announced products and accessories over the next few days, so keep your eyes fixed firmly on the blog.

Ant.
